Why Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Protection Matters All Year in NW Ohio & SE Michigan

When the weather starts to warm up, it is easy to think spring has arrived and with it, parasite season. But the truth is, parasites do not follow the calendar. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can remain active even during colder months, and pets in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan can be exposed year-round.

At Oliver Mobile Veterinary Services, we encourage consistent, year-round parasite prevention as one of the most important ways to protect your pet’s long-term health.

Why Parasites Don’t Take the Winter Off

Many parasites are surprisingly resilient. While freezing temperatures may reduce outdoor activity temporarily, they do not eliminate the risk.

  • Fleas and ticks can survive inside warm homes

  • Parasites can hide in garages, under decks, and in leaf piles

  • Mild winter days allow dormant parasites to become active again

  • Wildlife can introduce parasites into your yard

  • Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, which can survive longer than most people realize

  • Indoor-only pets are still at risk when parasites are carried inside on shoes or clothing

Because exposure can happen at any time, skipping prevention during certain months leaves pets vulnerable.

The Risks of Fleas, Ticks, and Heartworm: Why Parasite Prevention Matters

Parasites are more than just a nuisance. They can transmit serious diseases and cause long-term health problems.

  • Fleas can lead to skin infections, allergies, and tapeworms

  • Ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis

  • Heartworm disease can cause permanent heart and lung damage and may be fatal if left untreated

Preventing these parasites is far easier and safer than treating the diseases they cause.

What Pet Owners Can Do

Simple, consistent habits make a big difference.

  • Keep pets on veterinarian-recommended monthly preventatives year-round

  • Perform routine coat checks after outdoor activity

  • Wash pet bedding regularly and vacuum carpets and furniture

  • Keep yards clear of debris and standing water

  • Schedule routine wellness exams and recommended screenings

Your veterinarian can help select the best prevention plan based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health history.
