Flea and Tick Prevention Is Not One Size Fits All

Flea and tick prevention is an important part of keeping pets healthy, but it is not one size fits all.
What works well for one pet may not be the best choice for another. A dog who spends time hiking, running through tall grass, visiting dog parks, or living with other pets may need a different prevention plan than a mostly indoor cat or a senior pet with health concerns.
Age, weight, species, lifestyle, medical history, and household exposure all matter when choosing the right product.
This is especially important for cats. Some flea and tick products made for dogs can be dangerous for cats, even in small amounts. Multi-pet households also need to be careful, especially if dogs and cats share sleeping areas or groom one another.
Fleas and ticks are more than a nuisance. Fleas can cause itching, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and can lead to infestations inside the home. Ticks can carry diseases that may affect pets and, in some cases, people too. Prevention is usually much easier than treating a problem after it starts.
Before choosing an over the counter product, it is always best to talk with your veterinarian. Your pet’s prevention plan should be based on their individual needs, not just what is available on the store shelf.
At Oliver Mobile Veterinary Services, we help pet owners choose prevention that makes sense for their animal, their home, and their lifestyle.
