Summer weather can be hard on animals, especially during hot, humid days.
As temperatures rise, it is important to keep a close eye on dogs, cats, and horses. Heat stress can happen quickly, especially for senior animals, young animals, overweight pets, animals with breathing issues, and horses working or turned out in full sun.
Animals do not handle heat the same way people do. Dogs and cats can overheat quickly, and hot pavement can burn sensitive paw pads. Horses can also struggle during periods of high heat and humidity, especially when exercising, traveling, or standing outside without enough shade and airflow.
Summer Heat Safety Reminders for Pet Owners
A few simple precautions can help keep animals safer during hot weather:
• Provide fresh, clean water at all times
• Make sure animals have access to shade
• Avoid walking dogs on hot pavement
• Exercise pets and horses during the cooler parts of the day
• Never leave pets in a parked vehicle• Use fans, shade, or proper ventilation when appropriate
• Watch closely after exercise, travel, or turnout in full sun
For dogs and cats, signs of heat stress may include heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion, distress, or collapse.
For horses, signs may include excessive sweating, heavy breathing, weakness, poor recovery after exercise, a high temperature, or in some cases, not sweating when they should be.
If something seems off, it is always better to ask early instead of waiting.
