Cold weather can be especially tough on older pets and animals managing ongoing health conditions. A little extra care during the winter months goes a long way in keeping them comfortable, safe, and feeling their best.
Time outdoors
Senior pets and animals with arthritis, heart disease, or breathing issues are more sensitive to cold temperatures. Short, purposeful trips outside are easier on their bodies than extended time in the cold.
Paw protection
Snow, ice, and road salt can irritate paw pads and cause cracking. Wiping paws after walks helps prevent discomfort, and pet safe booties or paw balm can add another layer of protection.
Mobility support
Cold weather can increase stiffness and joint pain. Non slip rugs, runners, and a little extra help on steps or slick floors can reduce the risk of falls and injuries inside the home.
Warmth matters
Soft beds lifted off cold floors, extra blankets, and sweaters for pets with thinner coats help maintain body heat and keep muscles relaxed.
Appetite and hydration
Some pets drink less water in winter. Encourage regular hydration and keep an eye on changes in appetite or energy, as these can signal discomfort or underlying issues.
Cold weather safety
Pets should never be left in cold vehicles or outdoors for extended periods. Even short exposure to freezing temperatures can be dangerous for vulnerable animals.
If your pet seems slower than usual, uncomfortable, or has special medical needs, winter is an ideal time to check in.
