Animals are very good at hiding discomfort, illness, and subtle changes in their health.
That is why wellness exams are important, even when your dog, cat, or horse seems completely fine. Regular checkups give your veterinarian a chance to catch small changes early, talk through any concerns, and help keep your animal feeling their best.
A wellness visit is not only for animals who are sick. It is a chance to look at the full picture of your animal’s health, including their weight, comfort, habits, lifestyle, and risks.
What Your Veterinarian May Review During a Wellness Exam
During a wellness exam, your veterinarian may review things like:
• Weight and body condition
• Skin, ears, eyes, and dental health
• Mobility and comfort
• Vaccination needs
• Parasite prevention
• Nutrition and behavior changes
• Seasonal concerns for horses and pets
• Any changes you have noticed at home or in the barn
Even small changes can matter. A slight change in weight, movement, appetite, breathing, attitude, coat condition, or behavior may give your veterinarian helpful information.
Questions to Ask During a Wellness Appointment
It can be helpful to write down questions before your appointment, especially if you have noticed small changes or have multiple animals to discuss.

• Is my pet at a healthy weight?
• What should my pet’s ideal weight be?
• Is there anything special I should do for my pet’s current life stage?
• How do my pet’s teeth and gums look?
• What should I do about behavior changes I have noticed?
• What is the best way to protect my pet from parasites year round?
• Which vaccinations do you recommend?• Would a titer test be appropriate for my pet?
