Allergy season is not just for people. Dogs and cats can feel it too.

As pollen, grass, and other environmental allergens increase in the spring, pets may start showing signs that something is bothering them. While humans often deal with sneezing, watery eyes, or congestion, pets usually show allergies through their skin, ears, and paws.

If you have noticed your dog or cat scratching more than usual, licking their paws constantly, or developing red, irritated skin, spring allergies could be part of the problem.

Common signs of allergies in pets may include:

• Excessive scratching or biting at the skin

• Red or inflamed ears

• Constant paw licking or chewing

• Hair loss

• Hot spots

• Red, irritated skin

• Increased rubbing against furniture or carpet

The tricky part is that these symptoms can also look like other issues, including fleas, skin infections, ear infections, food sensitivities, or other medical concerns. That is why it is important not to ignore ongoing itching, chewing, or skin irritation.

Getting ahead of allergy symptoms can help prevent your pet from becoming more uncomfortable. When itching continues, pets may damage their skin, leading to sores, infections, or more serious irritation.

The good news is that there are ways to help manage allergies and keep your pet more comfortable throughout the season. Depending on your pet’s symptoms, a veterinarian may recommend skin care, ear care, medication, allergy management, or additional testing if needed.

At Oliver Mobile Veterinary Services, we make it easier to have your pet checked without the added stress of loading them into the car or waiting in a clinic. Dr. Oliver provides veterinary care right in your home, which can be especially helpful when your pet is already uncomfortable.
