May 20 is National Rescue Dog Day, a day set aside to raise awareness for shelter dogs, encourage adoption, and honor the incredible impact rescue dogs have on the lives of the people who love them.

Founded in 2018, National Rescue Dog Day helps shine a light on dogs who have been abused, abandoned, surrendered, or overlooked. It is also a reminder that so many dogs are still waiting for a second chance.

Rescue dogs come with all kinds of stories. Some need time, patience, training, and medical care as they adjust to a new home. Others seem to know right away that they have found their person. Either way, they deserve compassion, consistency, and the chance to feel safe.

If you have recently adopted a rescue dog, a veterinary visit is an important first step. Even if your new dog appears healthy, a wellness exam can help review vaccine history, parasite prevention, nutrition, dental health, behavior concerns, and any medical needs that may not be obvious right away.

A few things new rescue dog owners should consider include:

• Bring any shelter or rescue records to the first appointment

• Review vaccines and parasite prevention

• Give your dog time to decompress

• Create a calm routine

• Watch for changes in appetite, behavior, coughing, limping, vomiting, diarrhea, or skin irritation

• Be patient as your dog learns to trust their new environment

Rescue dogs can bring so much love, loyalty, and joy into a home. They also remind us that every dog deserves kindness, safety, and care.

We are honored to care for rescue dogs and the families who love them.
