County fair season means more horses are traveling throughout Ohio and beyond. Before you hook up your trailer, take a few minutes to complete a horse trailer safety checklist and make sure everything is ready for a safe trip.
A careful inspection can help prevent breakdowns, injuries, and unnecessary stress for both you and your horse.
Complete a Horse Trailer Safety Check Before Every Trip
Before leaving your property, inspect the following:
Tire pressure, tread, and lug nuts, including the spare tire
Trailer brakes, brake controller, lights, and turn signals
Hitch, coupler, safety chains, and breakaway cable
Trailer floors for rust, rot, loose boards, or damaged mats
Ramps, dividers, doors, and latches
Ventilation and airflow inside the trailer
Inside the trailer, make sure your horse has secure footing and enough room to balance comfortably.
Remove loose equipment that could shift during transport. Your emergency supplies should include:
Equine first aid kit
Spare halter and lead rope
Flashlight
Trailer jack
Tire changing tools
Roadside emergency supplies
Safe Driving Is Part of Horse Trailer Safety
Even experienced horses rely on the driver to help them maintain their balance.
Accelerate gradually, allow extra stopping distance, brake smoothly, and take corners slowly. Avoid sudden movements whenever possible.
During longer trips, make regular stops to check your horse, tires, hitch, and trailer condition.
Know the Animal Movement Requirements Before Traveling
If you are traveling outside Ohio for a show, exhibition, fair, or other event, review the animal health requirements for your destination before leaving.
Depending on the destination, you may need:
A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, commonly called a health certificate
A current negative Coggins test
Vaccination records
Official identification
Additional testing required by the destination state
The Interstate Animal Movement Requirements website allows horse and livestock owners to search current requirements based on the state of origin, destination, species, and type of movement.
Check interstate travel requirements:
Requirements can change, so always confirm current rules before traveling. If your horse needs a health certificate, Coggins test, or other travel paperwork, schedule your appointment early.
Regular Horse Trailer Maintenance Protects Everyone
Routine maintenance can identify problems before they become dangerous.
Have the following trailer components inspected regularly:
Wheel bearings
Brakes
Suspension
Tires
Flooring
Hitch components
Electrical systems
Lights and wiring
Rutgers Cooperative Extension also provides a helpful guide covering horse trailer maintenance and trailering safety:
Schedule Equine Travel Paperwork Early
Safe preparation helps protect your horse, your equipment, and everyone sharing the road.
