Dog in Ohio fall leaves with ongoing flea and tick prevention

Why Fall Flea and Tick Prevention Matters

As temperatures cool, many pet owners think it’s safe to skip parasite prevention until spring. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Parasites remain active well into autumn, and some survive Ohio’s milder winters.

  • Ticks stay active until the weather consistently drops below freezing. They often hide in leaf piles, brush, and wooded areas where dogs and outdoor cats love to explore.

  • Fleas thrive indoors year-round, especially in heated homes. Even one missed dose of medication can lead to an infestation that’s difficult and costly to treat.

  • Mosquitoes, which spread heartworm disease, may linger on warmer fall days. Heartworm is a serious, potentially fatal condition if left untreated.

According to the Ohio State University Extension, both ticks and mosquitoes remain active in Ohio longer than many pet owners expect, creating a continued risk into late fall (OSU Extension).

The Risk of Stopping Too Early

Stopping fall flea and tick prevention too soon creates a window where parasites can infect your pet. The consequences may include:

  • Itchy, irritated skin

  • Secondary infections or illness

  • Severe diseases like Lyme or heartworm

Treatment is much more difficult—and expensive—than prevention.

What You Can Do

To keep your pets safe this fall and beyond:

  • Continue monthly medications for fleas, ticks, and heartworm all year.

  • Ask Dr. Oliver which products best fit your pet’s lifestyle and environment.

  • Maintain your yard by clearing leaf litter and standing water—common breeding grounds for pests.

Don’t Be Fooled by Cooler Weather

The best gift you can give your pets this fall is protection. Year-round prevention keeps them healthy, comfortable, and safe from avoidable illnesses.
